Nielsen Library Seeks Graduate Students to Help Staff the Reference Desk

The Reference Department in the Nielsen Library seeks dependable and motivated graduate students to help staff the reference desk during professionally staffed hours and to assist patrons when regular staff is not present. Student workers will provide reference service in an effective, timely, and courteous manner. Students must be available to work for at least two semesters. Evenings and weekends may be required. This position is open to Graduate Students only.

Duties include:

• Provide reference assistance to library patrons. If unable to answer question, call on reference librarian.

• Assist users with the online catalog, print materials, and electronic databases.

• Provide patrons with directional information in locating materials and services.

• Answer telephone reference questions or refer callers to reference librarian on duty.

• Assist patrons in finding information and in learning how to conduct research and to find information on their own.

• Sorts reference books, non-reference books and current periodicals, loads on book trucks, and shelves reference books.

• Other duties as assigned

Senior English Major Capstone Readings

Senior Capstone ReadingsOn Thursday, April 24, at 7:00pm, the Nielsen Library will host a Senior Capstone Reading by graduating English majors Jessica Conda and Michael Sakowsky. Presented by the English Department, the event will also feature a reading by Chris Ransick, Denver Poet Laureate of 2006 and author of five works of fiction and poetry.

The reading is free and open to the community, and will take place on the second floor of the library. Refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there!

Local author will speak on Fremont’s fatal expedition at Nielsen Library

Fremont's Fatal Fourth

The Adams State University Nielsen Library continues its mission to provide stimulating presentations for campus and community. Stuart Bryan, local author of Fremont’s Fatal Fourth Expedition (1848-1849), will discuss the purpose and disastrous outcome of famed western explorer John C. Fremont’s winter trek through Southern Colorado as well as his own efforts to retrace Fremont’s path.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, in the library second floor lounge. The event is free and refreshments will be provided.

Bryan, a retired science teacher from Monte Vista High School and a longtime resident of the San Luis Valley, received Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the University of New Mexico. Fremont’s Fatal Fourth Expedition is the end result of over twenty years of research and writing.

The Nielsen Library is trialing Euromonitor International’s Passport, a comprehensive resource for global market analysis that includes industry, country, and regional reports, extensive statistics, and consumer and company market share data. The trial will runs through March 31, 2014.

Naxos Music Library – Trial Resource

The Nielsen Library is trialing Naxos Music Library through December 31. Naxos is the world´s largest online classical music library, offering streaming access to more than 89,780 CDs with more than 1,306,500 tracks, standard and rare repertoire. Over 800 new CDs are added to the library every month. The library offers the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogs plus the complete catalogs or selected titles from over 378 classical, jazz and world music labels with more labels joining every month.
