Computing Services Maintenance for Thursday, January 24, 2013

The following maintenance activities will take place tonight during our normally scheduled maintenance window beginning at 9:00 PM:

-There will be brief (5-10 minute) outages to various segments of our campus network as we perform upgrades to the networking switches. We will begin these updates in the Residence Halls first, and then move to employee buildings and areas. During these brief outages, all network services including wireless Internet access will be interrupted, but should be restored without the user needing to take action.

-Employee Windows computers will receive critical security and Operating System patches including updates to Windows, Thunderbird, Firefox, Flash, Shockwave and VLC. Employees are encouraged to log out and leave their computers on overnight tonight in order to allow the updates to install during non-work hours.

-Very brief outages will be experienced on the campus Content Management System (Bricolage), the campus LDAP server and web database server as we migrate these services to a different VM host. User impact should be minimal.

Computing Services thanks you for your patience and understanding as we perform these critical upgrades and maintenance activities. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the ASU Computing Services Help Desk at x7741 or via email at computingservices@adams.edu

Thanks and have a great day,

Phishing Attacks on Campus- Be Safe!

Adams State University employees and students have recently been heavily targeted by phishing scams. Phishing occurs when scammers attempt to trick you into giving out your personal information, such as your username and password or your bank account information.

Adams State University will NEVER ask for your username and password via email. If the email asks you to click a link to verify your account or respond with your account information, it’s a phish!

Can you identify phishing scams? Take a few minutes to play the phishing game and find out!

http://www.onguardonline.gov/media/game-0011-phishing-scams

What do you do if you get a phishing email?

Do not click any links or reply to the email! You can forward phishing emails to spam@uce.gov or to reportphishing@antiphishing.org. The Anti-Phishing Working Group, a group of ISPs, security vendors, financial institutions and law enforcement agencies, uses these reports to fight phishing. Once you’ve forwarded the message, please delete it.

If you suspect your account has been compromised please contact Computing Services immediately! We can be reached by calling 719-587-7741 or via email at computingservices@adams.edu

Computing Services Maintenance for Thursday, January 17, 2013

The following maintenance activities will be taking place today, January 17th:

-There may be brief interruptions of service to our campus voicemail system this afternoon (Thursday) as we work with the vendor to install a fax card into the system. Typically we try to perform this type of maintenance after hours, but because we need to have the vendor on-site to assist with the install, we are forced to do the upgrade during their working hours.

-Beginning at 9:00 PM and lasting roughly 2 hours, all Banner systems including Forms, Self-service Banner, School services and Banner printing will be down as we install a time-sensitive patch required for the printing of Employee W2 forms.

We apologize for any interruption these maintenance activities may cause, and we appreciate your understanding as we continue to strive to provide highly available and reliable services to our students, faculty and staff. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the ASU Computing Services Help Desk at x7741 or contact us via email at computingservices@adams.edu

Thanks and welcome back to a new semester!

Banner upgrade and downtime this Saturday, 12/15

Computing Services will be performing an upgrade to the Banner system beginning at 8 AM and lasting until approximately 12:00 noon. During this time, ALL Production Banner services including forms, School Services, and Banner Printing will be unavailable.

We know that there is never an ideal time to perform maintenance, but Computing Services attempts to time these types of upgrades so to minimize the impact to our users. We are taking the opportunity during Commencement in which faculty and staff are participating to perform this maintenance. Our intent is to have all Banner services restored and operational by noon.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call the ASU Computing Services Help Desk at 7741 or contact us via email at computingservices@adams.edu

Thank you,

****Old anti-virus software expired on Employee Computers****

Over the summer, Computing Services migrated all the computers on campus to a new antivirus. Instead of using Kaspersky Antivirus, we are now using Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection (abbreviated SCEP). In the system tray on your computer (by the clock) you should see a green square with a shield for SCEP instead of a red “K” for Kaspersky.

A few computers on campus did not automatically migrate to the new antivirus. Laptops that were off campus during the migration also may still have Kaspersky.

Last week our licensing for Kaspersky expired. If you still have Kaspersky installed on your computer you will no longer have valid anti-virus protection. If Kaspersky is installed, you should see a pop up notification that the license is expired.

Please contact Computing Services immediately so we can install SCEP on your computer to ensure that your workstation is protected from viruses and malware. If you have a laptop that still has Kaspersky, please bring it to the Computing Services Helpdesk.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Helpdesk at x7741 or email us at computingservices@adams.edu.

Thank you,

Computing Services

Stop.Think.Connect. -Security Tips for your home computer

President Obama has again declared October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month! You can read the White House statement here:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/10/01/presidential-proclamation-national-cybersecurity-awareness-month-2012

The National Cyber Security Alliance team encourages everyone to STOP.THINK.CONNECT.

The internet is an incredible tool, but you must use caution to ensure that your personal information remains secure and to protect yourself from virus infections.

I have an antivirus, why do I still get virus infections?

Antivirus solutions can block viruses that they have rules or definitions for, but new malware is released daily. It is critically important that you update your antivirus often so you are protected against recent threats. Some viruses are installed by infected webpages. Some viruses exploit old versions of software, like Java or Adobe. Recently, more virus infections have been spreading through social media, such as Facebook and Skype. If you click on an infected message and then download and run a file, you may be bypassing the protection provided by your Antivirus program.

Keep a Clean Machine

  • Keep security software current: Having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats.
  • Automate software updates: Many software programs will automatically connect and update to defend against known risks. Turn on automatic updates if that’s an available option.
  • Protect all devices that connect to the Internet: Along with computers, smart phones, gaming systems, and other web-enabled devices also need protection from viruses and malware.
  • Plug & scan: “USBs” and other external devices can be infected by viruses and malware. Use your security software to scan them.

Connect With Care

When in doubt, throw it out: Links in email, tweets, posts, and online advertising are often the way cybercriminals compromise your computer. If it looks suspicious, even if you know the source, it’s best to delete or if appropriate, mark as junk email.

  • Protect your $$: When banking and shopping, check to be sure the sites is security enabled. Look for web addresses with “https://” or “shttp://”, which means the site takes extra measures to help secure your information. “Http://” is not secure.

When in doubt, ask us!
