October is Cyber Security Awareness Month!

National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), conducted every October since 2004, is an annual awareness-raising effort that seeks to encourage everyone to protect their networks and our nation’s critical cyber infrastructure.

Today’s Tip:

Keep a Clean Machine.

Keep security software current: Having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system
are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats.

Automate software updates: Many software programs will automatically connect and update to defend
against known risks. Turn on automatic updates if that’s an available option..

Protect all devices that connect to the Internet: Along with computers, smart phones, gaming systems,
and other web-enabled devices also need protection from viruses and malware.

Plug & scan: “USBs” and other external devices can be infected by viruses and malware. Use your security
software to scan them

Computing Services Maintenance for Thursday, October 20th 2011

The following maintenance activities will take place beginning at 9 PM during the normally scheduled maintenance window:

  • The Bricolage Content Management System (CMS) and the Computing Services how-to wiki will be down for roughly 1 hour beginning at 9 PM for security patches and updates.
  • Plachy Hall, Porter Hall and Library network switches will be receiving firmware upgrades. This will result in an outage from 9 PM until midnight for all network services in these buildings.
  • All Employee and TEC Classroom computers will receive critical security patches to the Windows Operating System, Adobe Flash, Shockwave and Reader. Employees are encouraged to leave their computers on but logged out when they leave work for the day to allow these updates to be installed outside of work hours.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the ASC Computing Services Help Desk at x7741 or

via email at asccompserv@adams.edu.
