Scholar of the Week: Feb. 2

Shelby JanzIn a semester that is sure to be filled with outstanding, devoted Adams State students in the Scholar of the Week segments, sophomore Shelby Janz kicks off the spring editions.
Janz is enduring a substantial course load, taking such classes as Astronomy, Finite Mathematics, Principles of Economy, and Farm and Ranch Management, totaling up to 13 credit hours.
Janz, an agribusiness major, was interestingly enough nominated by Assistant Professor of Mass Communication Dr. Mark Finney for her heed in the classroom.  Finney, who taught Shelby’s English 102 course, had this to say about the student:
“She was a very attentive student who contributed important questions and valuable insight to class discussions.”  He went on to add: “She worked hard to incorporate material from the course into her work, even when it meant confronting her preconceived notions about the world.”
Like other college students, Janz is hard at work in areas outside of the classroom.  Not only is she a strong student, but she is on the developmental women’s basketball squad and also works at the Big R hardware store here in Alamosa.  For some, having so much of one’s time occupied throughout the day, balancing all of these duties would be virtually impractical, but for Shelby, all of her jobs positively affect each other.
“Being so busy has greatly helped my grades, because I don’t have much time for any other things, so I’m very focused on my classes,” explains the Scholar of the Week.
“Focused” is a great word to describe Janz, not to mention “committed.”  To keep each of her obligations in order, the sophomore effectively utilizes her planner with the intent of relieving her mind of memorizing her jam-packed schedule.  This helps her see her objectives clearly which allows her fulfill them properly.  With all this in mind, she is still fully aware that her main goal right now is to finish college and pursue a good job.
This agribusiness major is greatly influenced by her home life.  Growing up on a farm and being surrounded by different types of agriculture developed Janz’s rising interest in the field and ultimately led to her choice in major.
Janz lists her family, specifically her father, Don Janz, as one of her significant inspirations and aspires to be like him.  By looking at how he raised a daughter that makes smart decisions and appears to be tremendously dedicated to making a great life for herself, one could come to the fair conclusion that Mr. Janz must be a great man to have as a role model.

  1. I am Shelby’s Great Aunt, and I am impressed by the article, but not
surprised – it is obvious she will make her mark in the world.
