Adams State junior guard Deray Wilson has been named as the ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award for the week ending Feb. 20.
Wilson went 11-for-15 from the field and 6-from-9 beyond the arc as he scored a career-high 30 points in the Grizzlies’ Saturday night 78-71 win over nationally-ranked and RMAC-leading Colorado Mines. He also had three assists, two steals and two rebounds in that win after scoring 15 points while tallying four assists, four rebounds and a steal in Friday’s win over Colorado Christian.
Wilson’s six 3-pointers in the win over Colorado Mines were the most for any Grizzly in more than three seasons and was just one shy of the NCAA Division II era (1992-93/Present) school record.
For the weekend, Wilson averaged 22.5 points and shot 57.1 percent (16-28) from the field and 53.3 percent (8-15) from 3-point land. He also averaged 3.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game as the Grizzlies won their third and fourth straight games.
The ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award, which will be handed out weekly, was selected by a vote of media members and ASC athletic administrators as well as by visitors to the Grizzly website, who could cast their vote in an online poll.
Wilson, who won the online poll with 25 percent of the 144 percent votes cast, won the award by also nabbing five of the eight administrators and media members first place votes.
Senior Vera Jo Bustos of the women’s basketball team, who broke Adams State’s NCAA Division II era record for most points in a career, nabbed 24.3 percent of the 144 percent and nabbed two of the first place votes and finished in second place.
Other nominees were senior Sarah Lindquist of the softball team, KayMarie Jones of the women’s track team, Blair Sohl of the men’s track team and Brandon Lutz of the junior varsity men’s basketball team.
