The Adams State College Men’s Soccer team took on the University of the Southwest last Saturday in Hobbs, New Mexico. The game was a very high paced match-up and the first goal was scored by USW’s Javier Perez at the tenth minute mark. The Grizzlies answered with a goal of their own headed in by Caleb Johnson off of a Rami Avalos corner kick. The first half ended with the teams tied at one, though scoring chances were plentiful.
The second half is when the game really took off, as Rami Avalos tallied his first goal of the season, putting the Grizzlies up 2-1. Unfortunately the lead was short lived as USM’s Perez scored his second goal of the game and tying the score at 2. His goal was then followed up by teammate Ulises De La Cruz’s goal in the 84th minute.
The Mustangs did not stop there. Just three minutes later Cruz shot and nearly scored again but instead hit the crossbar, and rebounded to teammate Edgar Martinez who took full advantage and put the ball in the back of the net. The Grizzlies didn’t go down without a fight though, as Peter Freeman scored off of a Jesse Dunbar assist in the 86th minute of the match. In goal for the Grizzlies was redshirt freshman Jarod Thomas who had five saves, while David Metcalfe had four saves for the Mustangs. The three goals were a school record for the Grizzlies, who continue to look for a win in their first reason of competitive play. The Grizzlies are now 0-6-3 this season and hope to boost their record in their upcoming matches.
