Volleyball Team Drops Exciting Game to Mesa State Mavericks Friday Night

Last Friday night the Adams State Grizzlies suited up for a home match against the Mesa State Maverics in hopes to gain first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference West Division.  It was an intense close match with a total of five sets, but Adams State was not able to leave Plachy Hall with a victory. Scoring 25-21, 22-25, 25-27, 25-23, 15-12 losing the three sets by only a few points. The Grizzlies are now placed second in the RMAC.  Friday night was Go Green Night for the Grizzlies and had Plachy Hall was filled with a crowd of 676 and a majority of them proudly wearing green.

Senior middle hitter Darcy Jennings-Calkins had a career-high of 27 kills while freshmen outside hitter Dominique Davis had 11 kills and there were 10 more from middle junior Kelsey Miller who also hit a .588 for the night. Jennings-Calkins hit close a .700 in just the third set and finished the night hitting a .420 while having 50 swings and a team-high of five defensive blocks.

Sophomore libero AJ Palmer finished the evening with 18 digs, while Valerie Garcia had 10 digs for the evening and Tamara Fowler freshman Vanessa Cushine each had nine during Friday nights game.  Mary McNeil had 51 assists during the game while setter Tara King recorded 54.

The Mavericks had not won in Plachy Hall since 2006 are now number one in the RMCA West Division for volleyball. The Grizzlies will be on the road for five straight matches.
