After a devastating 9-2 loss only a week prior, the Grizzlies fought it out in a much closer match-up against Regis last Sunday at Murphy Field. The Grizzlies came out strong, with quick shots in the eighth and ninth minutes by Kenzie Favero and Clarissa Medina, respectively. The Grizzlies finally took advantage of their high pace start in the eleventh minute with a header goal from senior Ashley Sales assisted by teammate Ashley Grover. Grover took the ball up the side of the field under heavy pressure and was able to serve a great ball across the front of the goal to her teammate. The goal was Sales’ fourth of the season and the assist tallies two on the year for Grover.
The Grizzlies kept the pressure up for much of the first half, until the 21st minute where Regis was able to capitalize and make the game more even. The Regis goal came from a free kick taken by Marissa Davis which was saved by Grizzly keeper Kirsten Dorsey. It rebounded back into the feet of Ranger’s Katie Horn, who put the ball in the back of the net. Tasting blood, the Rangers took full advantage and scored only 77 seconds later with a goal by Heather Thomas, assisted by Kari Taylor.
The high paced match-up continued throughout the rest of the half, and though both teams had multiple scoring attempts, the half ended 2-1. The second half was not as evenly played, with the Rangers putting strong pressure on the defense of Adams State, but the Grizzlies were able to hold them back time and time again. The Rangers took a total of 24 shots in the game, 14 in the first half alone, as opposed to the Grizzly offense that tallied just 10 shots total.
Grizzly keeper Kirsten Dorsey had an extremely strong showing in the game, with 6 saves, bringing her season total to 52, third most saves in the RMAC. In goal for Regis was Marianne Clausen who had 3 saves total in the match up. Though they were unable to come up with the win, Adams did put a much better match. They continue to improve as the season progresses.
The Grizzlies now face a grueling schedule which consists of 10 games in the next month. Their next match-ups will be against No. 13 ranked Metro State (Oct. 2), Colorado Mines (Oct. 4), and a second match up against Nebraska-Kearney (Oct. 8). After this quick three away game contest ends they will travel home to face Mesa State College on October 11th at 2 p.m. The Grizzlies, who are now 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the RMAC, hope to boost their stats in the upcoming barrage of games.
