ALAMOSA, CO. (April 2, 2014) . . . An information session about a new minor in Latino Studies is planned for noon on Friday, April 11, at Adams State University’s C.A.S.A. house, located on Faculty Dr. just north of First St. Faculty will make a presentation and answer questions, and refreshments will be served.
The new minor is a cross-disciplinary program housed in the Department of History, Anthropology, Philosophy, Political Science, and Spanish. According to Dr. Ed Crowther, professor of history and department chair, the minor gives students in any major the opportunity to expand their understanding of economic, social, and cultural relationships in an ever more globalized world. It includes courses from the fields of language, history, literature, sociology, and political science, taught by faculty with expertise in Latino aspects of these fields.
“With the San Luis Valley as our home, with its rich, Hispanic culture, this is one way Adams State keeps those traditions and heritage alive,” Crowther said.
The Latino Studies minor requires students take 19 credit hours. Four credits must be in Elementary Spanish I or II, with the remainder selected from among 10 courses in various disciplines. Students must take at least one course each from English, political science, history, and sociology.
Three courses applicable to the minor will be offered for the Fall Semester 2014: SPAN 103: Elementary Spanish I, ENG 365: Ethnic & Minority Lit, and HIST 328: Chicano History.
