GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A strike off the foot of freshman Erik Henrickson (Burley, Idaho) put the Grizzlies on top after just a minute and 21 seconds on Sunday afternoon against  Colorado Mesa, but the Mavericks scored the next five en route to handing ASC a 5-1 loss in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action.
The Grizzlies now stand at 2-4-1 on the season and 1-3 in RMAC play while Colorado Mesa earned their first win of the season to improve to 1-7-1 and 1-4 in league competition.
Henrickson’s first career goal was assisted by redshirt-freshman Johnny Mercer (Longmont, Colo.) who notched his first career assist on the play, putting the ball into the box from where Henrickson found the right-hand corner of the net.
At just 1:21 into the match, the goal was the fastest in Adams State men’s soccer history.
But the Mavericks took over from there, and held a 2-1 advantage at the break. Jeremy Gwerder tallied the first CMU goal on an assist from Sean Foster at the 16:33 mark, and at 32:31 Danny Molineaux found the top of net on a pass from Alan Hernandez.
Molineaux was also the first to strike in the second half for the Mavs, scoring his second at the 47:09 mark. Mouhamad Gaye scored the final two at 61:09 and 87:48.
The Grizzlies were outshot 21-4 in the match, as four different ASC players got off one shot apiece.
Freshman keeper Michael Miller (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) made six saves while allowing four goals, and sophomore Paul Pizza (Alamosa, Colo.) made one save while allowing one goal in the final 16:49 of the match.
The Grizzlies return to ASC Soccer Field for their first home RMAC games this Friday and Sunday. On Friday Adams State will host Metro State at 3 p.m., before taking on Colorado State-Pueblo at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Roadrunners are in second in the RMAC standings with a 6-2-1 overall record and a mark of 4-1 in league play. The Thunder Wolves are currently 2-5-1, and boast a 2-2 RMAC record.
