What’s your fitness level? If you don’t know, an opportunity to find out is now here.

Fitness tests are available through the Human Performance and Physical Education (HPPE) Department’s Human Performance Lab. The lab is open to students and to the public. The fitness tests are offered at affordable prices, and the lab is operated by Dr. Tracey Robinson, a HPPE professor, and Maria Martinez, a graduate assistant.

The VO2 Max is one of fitness tests they offer, for $50. “VO2 Max” stands for volume, oxygen and maximum. This test measures an individual’s ability to transport oxygen during incremental physical exercise, and determines the proper threshold for training so you can get the most from your workout. The VO2 test usually lasts for about 45 minutes.

The Wingate anaerobic test is also offered at $10. The Wingate test is believed to represent the all-out peak anaerobic power and capacity, ideal for sports that utilize quick, maximum efforts, such as sprinting events in track. In the Wingate test, you pedal on a cycle ergometer in 30 second bursts. This is done to determine peak anaerobic power and capacity. For the Wingate test, allow ten minutes.

The FitnessAge test is also $10. This test is comprehensive, giving detailed information about your body composition, flexibility, endurance and strength. The FitnessAge test reveals the actual age of your body, a number that can be higher or lower that your actual age. The FitnessAge test is an inspiring fitness test; it reveals the health of your body, while noting where you can improve.

The FitnessAge test is also very detailed. From it, you learn what is hindering your health and therefore come to understand what you need to improve on to attain a healthier life. This test is statistics based, taking into account family history and lifestyle, and screens you for different types of cancers and diseases. The FitnessAge test takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Body composition measurements are also offered for $5. These measurements are done on the skin folds of an individual’s body. The measurements are compiled together to equate body fat percentage. The body composition measurements only take five minutes.  Individualized fitness programming is also available at the HPPE lab for an extra $10.

These tests and measurements are designed to aid people in their endeavors to live healthier lives. They determine where an individual’s fitness level is at, and can set a course to reaching those healthy goals. They also provide an understanding of fitness weaknesses and strengths. This information can help you achieve and improve upon your fitness goals for 2013.

The lab is open from 5pm to 7pm on Tuesday evenings. Appointments are needed for fitness tests. To set up an appointment, call 719-587-7663. You can also reach Martinez at martinezmm008@grizzlies.adams.edu or Dr. Robinson at tlrobins@adams.edu.
