As Adams State University students, we believe that giving back to our local and regional community is of the upmost importance and, thankfully, there’s a course through Human Performance and Physical Education (HPPE) that provides that opportunity while gaining valuable trade skills. The Sports Facilitation and Event Management course (HPPE 305), instructed by Professor Peggy Johnson, provides students with the real-life experience of planning and operating actual sporting events. Since the beginning of the spring semester, we have been planning multiple events for the SLV Dust Devils Basketball team through the Special Olympics organization. On February 8th, 2014, the Dust Devils competed at Mesa Ridge High School in Colorado Springs in the 22 years and up, Division IV, all athlete league.
The crowd’s excitement couldn’t be contained when the SLV Dust Devils captured second place over the Pueblo Crush White: 38-26, but gracefully lost to the Rams in back to back games: 46-20. Although the Devils didn’t claim first place during the tournament, they did have a chance to show off their basketball skills, and some of their athletes even received special recognition. Chuck Silva took first place in the individual basketball skills competition, and Joe Ray Medina took second. Overall, it was an amazing competition between three very talented and well-supported teams. If you want to experience this action yourself, join us on March 2nd, 2014 in Plachy Hall on the Adams State Campus for the final spring season basketball tournament and skills showcase in the main gym beginning at 1:30p.m.
