Volleyball Drops Two Out of Last Three

On Thursday night, the Grizzly volleyball team had their first home opener of the 2011 season. Their first game was against the Colorado Christian Cougars. The Grizzlies came out firing, taking a two game lead against the Cougars. The third, fourth and fifth games were a battle for the Grizzlies. In the end, the Grizzlies were not able to pull off the win. The Cougars ended up winning in 5 sets (25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 15-10). Redshirt freshman, Mikaela Hoelsken lead the team with 16 kills against the Cougars.
Friday night, the intense play continued. Frustrated from the previous night, the Grizzlies were determined to fight harder than ever against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. The Orediggers came out strong with a two game lead. After intermission however, the Grizzlies fought back and went on to win the next three games 24-26, 20-25, 25-15, 25-16, 15-13. Sophomore Megan Tapia and junior Dominique Davis combined for 33 of ASC’s 63 kills.
The last day of competition was Saturday afternoon against the number 5 team in the nation, University of Nebraska Kearney. In the first game, the Lopers came out victorious. But the second game was a different story. The grizzlies did not settle and ended up taking a set from the Lopers. The Lopers went on to take the next two games from the Grizzlies, ending the day with a four game set.
