The New Age for the Smartphone: Bloks

Tri-Beta Club

How many times in a year does an individual drop their phone and break it? What about into the toilet? How many people lose their phone after a night of bar hopping or a night on the town? Every time a phone breaks, needs replacing, or we desire an upgrade we are creating what is called e-waste. E-waste stands for electronic waste, very straight forward but do you realize that with every upgraded phone, that awesome new Apple Macbook Pro Air that you just have to have or that Canon DSLR EOS 5D Mark lll EF 24-105mm IS lens kit that happened to catch your eye, you are adding to the 20-50 MILLION TONS of electronic waste each YEAR! That is a lot of waste, which obviously is not biodegradable and does not seem to be going anywhere.
Now a Dutch designer by the name of Dave Hakkens came up with this new a radical idea: Smartphone Bloks. This concept is similar to the concept of legos. There is a main board with connecting holes which would allow these “bloks” to be inserted to create a smart phone. It’s held together by two screws which would allow these “bloks” to be easily replaced and upgraded rather than tossing the entire device. There will be a “blokstore” which is like an app market except it’s for the hardware of the phone.
The entire phone is customizable, say you are a big photographer and don’t care much for bluetooth or a super-fast processor for your internet access. You just need a lot of internal memory and an out-of-this-world camera. The awesome thing about this blok smart phone is that you can have exactly that. You don’t have to have bluetooth, a fast processor or any of the other fancy features that come already built in the phones today. Or even say you want a little bit of everything…You can have exactly that! A lot of what kills phones is just one part that happens to be fried, but the “blokstore” will allow you to replace that singular piece of hardware without having to spend hundreds of dollars on a new phone.
The only downside to this new age is the fact it is merely a concept. It is currently still being designed and so far there are no major phone or technology based companies that have seemed to recognize and fund this project. Currently Dave Hakkens is sending what is called a “Thunder Clap” throughout major social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and, Tumblr so this project can get recognition. There are 894,723 supporters and there are 19 days left for this revolution and if you would like to be a part of it, go to phonebloks.com and give a shout out.
