New Media Degrees to be Offered at Adams State

Big news arrives for the academia of the San Luis Valley: Adams State University will be offering new majors, available to future students this upcoming semester of Fall 2019. The news comes with the approval of the Board of Trustees of Adams State. The three majors will be bachelor degrees focused in media and communications. The first of the degrees is a B.A. in Media Industry Communications. This degree will be fully online and will feature classes like Digital Filmmaking and Spanish Media. The second new degree that Adams will be offering is a B.A. in Communication and Media Studies. This degree will feature classes such as Business of TV and Radio, and PR and Strategic Communication. Last, but not least, the final degree will be a B.A. in Public Relations. This degree is oriented towards the business side of media with half of the classes being business and the other half revolving around media and communications. The three new degrees are an expanded version of the previous Mass Communications degree. Going from a broad degree to three more specific degrees will benefit students in helping them pinpoint more specific careers as they graduate college. It doesn’t matter whether you want to be in front of the camera or behind it, Adams State now has the degrees for both.

The three new bachelor degrees are set up to meet a growing demand in the job market for media and communications professionals. This comes off the trend of social media that has engulfed our world in the past ten years. As media and social media alike progresses, entertainers, companies, celebrities, and some of the top brands are looking for new and innovative ways to get ahead with media. Adams State University sees this and wants to provide the best opportunities it can to students to fill those roles stated above. I was able to sit down with the head of the communications department, Dr. Beth Bonnstetter, and asked her what future students can do to find out more and apply. She said, “Contact me… They should also apply to Adams State. If they are interested in the online degree, they will need to contact Extended Studies, soon to be called Adams State Online. If they are already students and are interested in the face-to-face degrees, they should declare a change of major at One Stop.” If anyone is interested in the new media and communications degrees being offered next Fall (2019), feel free to stop in at Adams State One Stop for more questions or email Dr. Beth Bonnstetter at bbonnstetter@adams.edu. Look to Adams State for more innovation and progress with its media program!
