In the final minute of regulation and again in the first minute of overtime, Grizzly freshman Conor McLaughlin (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a crucial hand in goals that forced the extra period and then ended Saturday’s Adams State lacrosse exhibition contest against the Univeristy of Colorado club team.
The Grizzlies, who opened the regular season last weekend with a loss against Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (WILA) member Colorado Mesa, have now claimed victory in two of their three exhibition match-ups.
After a scoreless first period, ASC took a 2-1 lead into the break thanks to second period goals from sophomore Anthony Willner (Littleton, Colo.) and Anthony Damico (Littleton, Colo.). Damico would later assist on McLaughlin’s game-winner in overtime.
ASC held a 20-12 advantage in shots in the first half, but CU came on strong and outshot the Grizzlies 24-13 in the second. Freshman keeper Ronnie Fernando (Lake Forest, Calif.) was solid in the net, making 10 saves in the second half and 12 in the game, but the Buffaloes managed to score two unanswered, and held a 3-2 lead with 4:53 left in the game.
With just under one minute remaining, freshman Jamison Bobo caused a turnover which led to McLaughlin finding freshman Josh Peterman (Santa Ana, Calif.) to tie the game with four seconds left.
Fernando made his final save of the game in the final five seconds to ensure OT, and a one minute penalty against CU for cross-checking as time expired allowed Adams State a man-up opportunity to begin overtime.
It took just 40 seconds before Damico found McLaughlin for the game-winner once the extra period started, giving ASC its second exhibition win of the season.
The exhibition portion of the schedule now complete, the Grizzlies will embark on a span of five games in 10 days next week, beginning with back-to-back game on Thursday and Friday, March 8-9, against Le Moyne (N.Y.) and Alfred (N.Y.). Both games will be played on neutral sites, at Regis Jesuit HS in Denver against Le Moyne Thursday, and then at Colorado College against Alfred on Friday.
