Jazz Festival Featuring Bobby Shew and ASC Big Band

Jazz Festival scheduled at Adams State College
Jazz legend, Bobby Shew, will perform during the Adams State College Jazz Festival on Dec. 2 and 3. The festival includes a concert, music clinics, and performances by guest artists and Adams State faculty.
The Friday night, Dec. 2, concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in Richardson Hall, and will feature Bobby Shew performing with the ASC Big Band. Born in Albuquerque, N.M., Shew started playing trumpet at age ten. His early years included gigs at social occasions, summers in New York listening to great jazz masters, and studying under musicians such as Don Jacoby, Conte Candoli, Johnny Richards, John LaPorta, and Shelley Manne.
While in the Army, Shew was assigned as jazz soloist to NORAD BAND in Colorado Springs. Later, he moved to NYC and joined Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, playing with legendary Charlie Shavers. After Dorsey, Shew played with Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Si Zentner, and Benny Goodman. His career includes playing top show bands in Las Vegas casinos, first-call studio musician in Los Angeles, and performing with Bill Holman, Bob Florence, Louie Bellson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Ed Shaughnessy, Bill Berry, and Nat Pierce-Frank Capp Juggernaut.
Shew has designed and developed Yamaha brand trumpets, flugelhorns, and mouthpieces. He is a published author, has taught at various institutions, and has been an artist-in-resident in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, Canada, and Austria. He was elected into the New Mexico Music Hall of Fame has been nominated numerous time for a Grammy, and in 1982 received the Jazz Album of the Year Award.
Saturday night a concert featuring PROJECT Trio will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Leon Memorial Hall. According to the website projecttrio.com, PROJECT Trio is a passionate, high-energy chamber music ensemble comprised of three virtuosic composer/performers from Brooklyn, NY. Blending their classical training with an eclectic taste in musical styles, PROJECT Trio has made an impact on audiences of all ages. Bursting onto the scene with their landmark videos, right out of the internet generation, PROJECT Trio is a musical experience defining a new level of entertainment.
The ASC Invitational Jazz Festival is an annual event hosted by James Doyle, visiting assistant professor of music. The invitational provides an opportunity for middle school and high school ensembles to perform for top professional clinicians from throughout the country. In addition, each ensemble member will have the opportunity to attend numerous master classes, clinics, and special performances.
Guest artists include Chuck Lamb of the Brubeck Brothers, Project RIO with beat boxing flutist sensation Greg Pattillo, vocal improviser Theano Lamb, and from the USAF Academy Band Falconaires, Ryan James, saxophones, Marcel Marchetti, trumpet; and Jason Crowe, bass; and Adams State music faculty.
