The disastrous earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday, January 12 has left a wake of death and desolation among the inhabitants of southern Haiti. The 7.0-magnitude quake devastated the capital city of Port-au-Prince and its surrounding areas. Since the earthquake, massive relief efforts have been organized to provide aid for the victims. The United States, Canada, Europe, and other nations have been sending supplies and food to the survivors of the earthquake which is estimated to have killed over 200,000 people and left close to 1.5 million people homeless. Coloradans are pitching in to help people from Haiti as well. The Colorado National Guard was deployed January 27 for fifteen days to bring medical supplies and food to the people of Haiti. Also, the Haiti Relief Project, founded in the state of Colorado in 1989, raises money specifically for the people of Haiti and continues to work to raise funds for the relief efforts in the area. The project is based in Louisville, Colorado.

Adams State College is doing their part to help the victims of Haiti. On February 4, a booth will be set up in the Student Union Building showing students what they can do to help the victims in Haiti. Also, Adams State College, Alamosa High School, and several other organizations in the community will be putting on a benefit dinner on February 11. This dinner will serve food native to Haiti, and the money raised will go to the aid of those in need. For those interested in attending, the Hope for Haiti benefit dinner will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.  Thursday at the Sacred Heart Church.
