This past weekend the swim team definitely had their work cut out for them as they hosted their season opener on Saturday.
The men and women competed against the Mesa State Mavericks and the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers.
In the three-way women’s dual, teams were scored head-to-head while all three swam at the same time. The Grizzlies fell short in both duals, 229-122 against Mesa State and 191-143 when against Colorado Mines. In the dual between the Mavericks and Orediggers, Mesa came out on top with a 221-135 victory. The three teams came together to set new Plachy Hall Pool records in 13 of the 17 events contested.
Adams State freshman Jennell Higgs, from New Mexico, came out with the only event win of the day. Higgs swam a time of 2 minutes and 21.20 seconds in the 200-yard butterfly. Added to the win, Jennell also beat the school’s past record by nearly six seconds. She also beat another record as she clocked in a 5:12.24 in 400 individual medley.
The other women on the team also set new standards for Adams State. Amanda Angelovich set a new high in the 50 free with a time of 27.27 seconds. Freshmen Mary Giza set the standard in the 1,000 free, completing the race in 12.15:87
This was the first time in 40 years that Adams State has a men’s swim team, and they held their own on Saturday’s dual.
The Mesa State men were victorious over ASC 283-83, and Colorado Mines scored a 270-67 victory against the Grizzlies. The Mavericks also scored a victory in their dual with the Orediggers by a tally of 216-157.
