Excitement ran through the halls of Coronado A-wing on Tuesday, March 2. The newly renovated halls were open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Director of Housing, Bruce DelTondo was present to meet students and to discuss the renovations of the residence hall.

DelTondo expressed his enthusiasm about the grand hall opening – “It’s definitely an exciting moment. The feedback that we have received has been nothing but positive.”

ASC students are definitely excited to see their money being put to good use. The capital fee proposal was presented during the spring semester of 2008 and ASC students approved it on March 2008. The proposal described how the capital fee was designed to work. “This fee, which escalates over a period of ten years, will enable ASC to immediate secure financing to make the necessary facility improvements.” 70% of the capital fee will be used for construction bond financing, 20% for scholarships and grants, 6% for building repair, 2.5% for technology upgrades, and 1.5% for equipment repairs.

“The students are able to see the benefits from approving the capital fee,” explains DelTondo. “These are noticeable changes that have direct impacts for our students.”

Fonz Velazquez, who has never lived in the resident halls, walked around during the opening of Coronado A-wing and wished he had! “I like it, the colors make it more lively and happy, and the carpet makes it more comfortable and gives it the ‘homey’ look.” Fonz also mentioned how happy he was to see how his money was being used.

And what does the future look like for the rest of the residence halls? DelTondo explains the future plans, “We’re starting the renovations of Coronado D-wing on March 8, 2010, and we’re expecting it to be ready for the fall semester. The new building should also be ready by then. During this summer we will also be renovating the south side of Girault and that will also be available during the fall semester.” This is certainly an exciting time to be an ASC student.
