In today’s prosperous society we have an abundance of food. We have so many options and different food types that sometimes it’s hard to sort out the bad from the good. There is an increasing demand for people to eat healthier and watch out for certain ingredients in food like gluten, Saturated fats Trans fats and the bucket load of sugar and sweetners that are in most foods.
The truth is that most manufactures don’t want to you to know what chemicals and ingredients they use in their food products. Chemicals that are used as weed killers, flame retardants, and sunscreen are increasingly found in food products that we consume.  We see a large amount of dangerous carcinogen ingredients in frozen foods, deli meats, and some of our favorite drinks.
Not only are these huge corporations like Nestle and Pepsi knowingly adding carcinogenic ingredients, they are also using modified ingredients due to their cheap availability. However, the risks of using modified ingredients hasn’t been fully tested and recorded due to their recent development into human foods.
Next time you’re food shopping, take a look at the ingredients. I guarantee there is a modified ingredient in your food. It’s not only frozen foods that contain these shocking and scary ingredients. Bill Philips, an editor from Men’s Health wrote an article on a number of products that have skeptical ingredients in them. Surprisingly, Gatorade was one of the products. Gatorade stated they will be removing a flame-retardant chemical (Brominated oil) from their drinks within the next couple of months.
In addition to Gatorade, Naked smoothies, a branch of Pepsi, where in the spot light recently as they settled out of court for nine million dollars due to the incorrect labeling of their all natural, non GMO fruit smoothie. The healthier option to a soda turned out to be just as bad, as they had over ten chemicals in them that weren’t on the label. A particular ingredient that is widely used in a number of soft drinks, low sugar ice creams, and other low sugar products is Acesulfame Potassium (Acesulfame-K). This ingredient is used in over 5,000 products worldwide. It is a calorie free artificial sweetener that was approved by the FDA.
Many healthy critics claim the FDA made this decision on flawed animal testing and say the ingredient is linked with lung and breast tumors along with thyroid problems. When we speak about this particular topic a certain phrase comes to mind, “You are what you eat.” If your diet consists of highly saturated fatty foods and sugary drinks it will have an effect on your mental and physical health. If you’re constantly downing fast food and drinking soda, it will have a negative effect on your body and mind.
An increasing amount of ingredients in our foods that have been approved by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have been linked to a number of serious health problems. In particular, some ingredients have been linked with different types of cancers. If there is one point I could ask you all to take away from this article is this, just read your labels carefully and be smart. Think about what you are putting into your body because after all, we are what we eat.
