ALAMOSA (March 17) – Two emerging essayists, Ginny Taylor and Jon Kerstetter, will share their work and their expertise with Adams State University and the surrounding community. The event begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the Nielsen Library second floor.
Taylor is a nonfiction writer from Ohio whose work examines the aftermath of sexual abuse. Her essay “Everything” won first place in the Whispering Prairie Press essay contest in 2012. Her essay “Odds and Ashes: A Litany for Many Voices” has been nominated for “The Best of the Net 2013” award.
Kerstetter completed three tours of duty in Iraq with the US Army as a combat physician and flight surgeon. His work examines the dual and often anguishing roles he has occupied as soldier and doctor. His essay “Triage” appears in The Best American Essays 2013.
Creative nonfiction writers, students, teachers, staff, and the public are also invited to an open mike reading immediately following. Choose a piece that will last up to five minutes. A sign-up sheet will be available on a first come-first served basis.
Both guest writers will host a CNF workshop for Adams State writers entitled “Writing the Personal Essay,” from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in McDaniel Hall room 216.
The event is sponsored by the Department of English, Theatre, and Communications, Extended Studies, and Nielsen Library.
