Box Office Hits- What to See and What to Avoid

Have you noticed how many hit movies are coming out recently? I sure have! I’m not a big movie person but a few have struck my interest so I decided to look into movies that are breaking into theaters.
To start with, it seems everyone is turning books into movies rather than coming up with original ideas; at least that’s the case with ‘The Book Thief’ and ‘Enders Game.’ I haven’t read either, although after seeing a preview for ‘The Book Thief,’ I want to read it.‘The Book Thief’ is about a young girl living with foster parents in Nazi Germany. She begins to collect books, even though they’re forbidden, and she shares them with the Jewish refugee hiding in her home.
The movie has a critics’ rating of a three out of five and a user rating of five out of five. From reading through the reviews, it seems the acting is done well and emotions are portrayed honestly. The lower reviews say the landscapes are unrealistic and war talk goes on and on. Overall, I still want to see the movie, more out of curiosity and I will probably read the book too.
‘Ender’s Game’ is about a brilliant young strategist who rises to the top of his class in Battle School while training to defend Earth against hostile aliens. My first reaction is ‘yawn,’ I’m tired of seeing movies about aliens trying to attack earth, and it gets old. This movie also scored a three out of five from a critic score and a four out of five from user ratings. When reading through the reviews, the overall feeling is that the movie is boring and the acting is flat. Some remark the actors seem numb to emotion, they can’t tell whether that’s on purpose or not. Others remarked that the movie was similar to Star Wars and the focus of the movie is on action and effects. I’m not sure I’ll bother with this one, overall people sounded disappointed.
‘Thor: The Dark World’ is about Thor returning to battle with Malekith to destroy the Nine Realms. The God of thunder reunites with Jane Foster and prepares to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the world from destruction. My main pull to this movie is that I loved the Avengers, so I’m definitely going to see it. It scores a 4.5 with critics and a four in user ratings. The biggest downside is how generic the movie is, which makes sense since it’s following a comic book.
When looking past its generic plot, reviews are positive, people seemed to love the movie and comment that it’s better than the first one. I will be seeing this movie and I hope to not be disappointed.
Well that’s it for now! I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ to come out!
