Athlete of the Week: September 15

Jessica Hellweg

Adams State College senior forward for the woman’s soccer team, Jessica Hellweg (Island Lake, Ill.), has been named as the ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Sept. 11.
Hellweg scored five goals and had one assist in three games last week as ASC recorded a 2-1 record, avenging losses against Texas-Permian Basin and Angelo State (Texas) from last year. Hellweg netted her first career hat trick on Friday, scoring three goals in a 12-minute span, after assisting on ASC’s first goal of the match to lead the Grizzlies to an early 4-0 lead. On Sunday she scored both Adams State goals, including the game-winner in overtime over Angelo. She now ranks second on ASC’s career goal scoring list with 19, one away from the career record of 20.
The ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award, which will be handed out weekly, was selected by a vote of media members and ASC athletic administrators as well as by visitors to the Grizzly website, who could cast their vote in an online poll.
Hellweg got a majority of the administrators and media member’s first place vote while also nabbing 29.5 percent of 258 votes that were cast online.
Volleyball player Gabriella Rifilato, men’s soccer player Hawken Hanna, men’s cross country runner Nathan Sellers, women’s cross country runner Kelly Lamb, Men’s golfer Willie Squires and football player Scott Kellogg were this week’s other nominees.
