Whether it is a couple’s first date, their 50th Valentine’s Day celebration, or you are still waiting for true love, the Adams State University Theatre Program Production, Ironic Love Affairs will bring laughter to your heart.
The production, featuring four one-act plays, opens at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, and continues nightly through Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Xperimental Theatre. Senior theatre majors Caty Herrick and Jackie McCann each directed two of the one-acts. “All four short plays make a cohesive production,” McCann said. Her plays, “Late Date” and “The Wedding” are set in contemporary times, while Herrick’s “The Bear” and “The Proposal” are set in the 1880s.
The four plays mirror one another, Herrick said: “You see the same problems arise in my scenes set long ago and in Jackie’s more contemporary plays. Some end with perfect love and others you can tell the relationship will be troubled.”
Both directors have enjoyed working together and with their cast and crew. “I love being able to create from my own ideas,” McCann said. “I take feedback from the actors and then decide to keep or not. We are all family.” Herrick enjoyed working on her “classic comedy” productions. “These plays were funny 100 years ago and are still really hilarious.” McCann and Herrick have known each other since they were freshmen. “We have the philosophy of working together,” Herrick said. “If Jackie’s shows succeed we both succeed.” McCann agreed, “It is going to be a hoot.”
Individual tickets are $8 for general public, $7 for seniors and students, and free to Associated Students and Faculty with current Adams state identification.
