For the entire month of December, ASC Community Partnerships has coordinated, and is presenting to the public, the third annual holiday art and craft show. The Holiday Art and Craft Show is an exhibit showcasing the very best that Alamosa residents and the rest of the San Luis Valley has to offer. Through the collaboration of this arts and crafts gallery, the artistic talents of our local community members can be interacted with directly in this gallery and browsers in the gallery can purchase and take home their favorite crafted piece.
The Craft Show started last week on Dec. 1 and is running through Dec. 23 in the ASC Community Partnerships building, located on the corner of Edgemont Blvd. and Main Street south of Richardson Hall. The exhibit is open during business hours from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
This year’s turn out of venders who specialize in handmade crafts and local goods has been a growing success with every year since its first Art and Craft Show, with new vendors and returning vendors coming together to show off their hand-crafted items and entice the viewers in a warm and homey atmosphere. The feel of the gallery itself is similar to a craft fair more so then a gallery and while the visitor can see the display of items on the walls as a gallery piece, each item in the room quickly becomes very welcoming and invites each patron to look around more intently.
There is even a section in the gallery that is open for children. For a small material fee, anyone is able to come and paint their own holiday ornament to their liking. The Holiday Craft and Art Show is an event that all students, faculty and local members of the community are encouraged to attend regardless of age or religious orientation.
Like many of the events at the Community Partnerships building, this craft show is to promote more interest and awareness of the vibrant assets our local community has to offer and vice versa. The goal of this gallery is to promote more local spending, just as much as promoting the giving of handmade items during the holiday season.  Given the financial struggles the economy has on virtually everyone this year, handmade gifts and local spending helps to maintain the local economy. It also allows for more creativity  to be shared among giver and receiver. Even if a person does not have a strong creative side, the Holiday Art and Craft Show with all the San Luis Valley based handmade gifts allows them to give gifts that still have that sentimentality.  The official reception of the gallery will be held on Friday, Dec. 16, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Community Partnerships building, at which the artists and craftspeople will be present to discuss their work and interact with patrons. Light snacks and drinks will be provided and the show is free and open to the public, all ASC students and Faculty are encouraged to attend. For more information on the craft show or the reception, please feel free to contact Community Partnerships at 587-7869.
