SAGUACHE, Colo. – While most Adams State students were enjoying a day off during the campus’ Fall Break on Thursday, Oct. 6, a group of 50 Grizzly lacrosse players and coaches took the day to assist the San Luis Valley Public Lands Center clean-up a recreation area in the making as part of an on-going clean-up project.
Inspired by ASC Cares Day, in which the Adams State student population is encouraged to take time and assist with the efforts of the non-profit agencies throughout the valley, assistant coach John McCreery contact the Bureau of Land Management concerning a hefty job they were looking for assistance with but would not be ready to tackle on Sept. 24.
With an out-of-season match scheduled during the Fall Break and a full men’s team on campus, as well as many members of the women’s squad as well, the ASC lacrosse team worked out Oct. 6 as a date to make their way to Saguache.
The Vista Grande area, the Grizzlies’ worksite for the day, was purchased by Saguache, which intends on making the area into a recreation site that will include campgrounds, hiking/biking trails, disc golf and more. Adams State’s 50-strong group were provided with t-shirts and snacks after signing up at the volunteer tent, and then focused on consolidating scrap wood into burn piles, collecting scattered trash, and sorting out recyclable materials, making a large dent in the short time spent on site.
The Grizzlies already have plans to head back for more, and will make a return trip to Vista Grande to help the recreation area get closer to fruition in November.
