Following a weekend where she put the Grizzlies back on a winning track while averaging 25.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game and recording her first double-double of the season, Adams State senior Vera Jo Bustos has been as the RMAC/Baden Offensive Player of the Week and has been named as the ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award for the week ending Feb. 6. This is the second time Bustos has won the award.
On Friday, Bustos was playing in her hometown for the final time in her collegiate career as the Grizzlies were on the road to face New Mexico Highlands. After a slow first half for the senior guard, Bustos exploded for 20 points after the break to finish with a game-high 27, her second highest total of the season.
For an encore, Bustos scored a game-high 24 points on Saturday night at Western New Mexico, and pulled down a season best 10 rebounds. Seventeen of Bustos’ points against the Mustangs came during the second half in which Adams State shot 70.8 percent (17-24) from the field, including a 3-of-5 (60.0 percent) effort from 3-point range for Bustos.
The ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award, which will be handed out weekly, was selected by a vote of media members and ASC athletic administrators as well as by visitors to the Grizzly website, who could cast their vote in an online poll.
Bustos won the award by nabbing a mere 13 points as she nabbed six first place votes of the eight administrators and media members who voted. Bustos also on the online vote as she garnered 35.8 percent of the 81 votes cast online.
The other nominees for the award were Luke McPeek, Calvin Fletcher, Indira Spence, Marquis Richards and Alyssa Smith.
