For new students and freshmen, getting involved in on campus activities can be challenging. Luckily for those students, Adams State offers a diverse group of clubs, ensuring that one will appeal to every student. For students interested in business, Adams State College’s premiere business club, Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is a great choice.
Three weeks into the semester, and PBL is already actively preparing for the upcoming year. PBL held their first meeting on August 31, welcoming new members to the club. September 7 marked the second PBL meeting, where new officers for the 2010-2011 school year were chosen.
Kenton Ellis and Stefan Ortega were elected co-presidents, and Lindsey Sykora was elected vice president of PBL. Kendra Marquez was elected the club’s secretary, and Savannah Schlaufman completes the new officer team as treasurer. Dr. Pat Robbins and Dr. Linda Reid, both business teachers at Adams State will be sponsoring PBL for the upcoming year.
Newly elected PBL President Kenton Ellis commented that PBL is “working hard on several fundraisers. Students should look for things coming around like our sucker drive, Phi Beta Lambda Discount cards, and our used book drive, and others. We are looking forward to a successful year.” Additionally, PBL will be active in ASC’s homecoming events this fall.
Adams State PBL is a chapter of the national organization, Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda, Inc. With more than a quarter of a million members nation-wide, it is the largest student business organization in the country. Adams State freshmen might be familiar with FBLA, PBL’s high school level sister organization.
As a member of PBL, students compete at the state and national level. PBL has 59 competitive events to choose from, and most of them are co-curricular and correspond with a business class that is offered at Adams State. Secretary Kendra Marquez is back for her second year in PBL, saying that “everyone in it really helps the club as much as they can and that helps make the club more successful and fun to be in.”
Over the summer, Adams State PBL traveled to the National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee on July 9 through the 12. There, PBL members A.J. Webb and Nick Karpilo brought national recognition to Adams State by placing third in Marketing Analysis and Decision Making.
This year, Adams State PBL will compete at the Colorado PBL State Conference on April 9 and 10 in Denver, CO. Those who qualify will compete in the National Leadership Conference on June 23 through the 26. This year it will be held in Orlando, Florida. The FBLA-PBL National Theme for the year is “Breaking Barriers,” and Adams State PBL is expecting to move PBL forward here on campus.
PBL is still recruiting members and meets every Tuesday in the School of Business in room 142. PBL is open to any Adams State student interested in networking with new people, getting involved on campus, or developing valuable leadership skills for the world of business.
