It is evident all around campus that fall is fast approaching.  However, there is a silver lining to the summer months coming to a close.  This September marks the seventh year that Adams State has held its annual fall celebration, Autumn@Adams.
Events will be held Monday, September 13 through Saturday, September 18, although “The Examined Life” art exhibit will be open during the entire month of September.  All of the Autumn@Adams events are open to students and members of the community, and, with the exception of the Chile Cook-off, all the events are free to attend.
Autumn@Adams’ theme for this year, chosen by the Autumn@Adams Committee, is “Everyone Has a Story to Tell/Todos Tienen Una Historia Que Contar.”  According to the Autumn@Adams committee chair, Linda Relyea, Autumn@Adams was introduced in order “to celebrate the unique characteristics of Adams State and the surrounding community” and this year’s theme was selected to highlight that aim.
The week will kick off with an address by speaker Laura Pritchett.  Freshmen might recall Pritchett as the author of Sky Bridge and the speaker at the start of the year Convocation.  She will be speaking at Nielson Library Commons at 3 p.m. and at 7 p.m. in Porter Hall room 130.  On Tuesday, Dave Zirin will take the Carsen Auditorium stage at 7 p.m.  Assistant vice president for extended studies, Walter Roybal, approached the committee about incorporating Zirin’s address.
Students can expect much from this year’s Autumn@Adams.  “The Last Lecture” will make it’s debut on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Porter Hall room 130, where Dr. John Taylor and Dr. Marty Jones will both address students as if it was their final opportunity to do so.  Both professors were chosen by students for this chance.
On Thursday, there will be a poetry reading at 7 p.m. in the Luther Bean Museum.   On Saturday, the week will wrap up with the Green and Red Chile and Salsa Cook-off.  Three dollars buys anyone taste-testing privileges, and attendees can vote on who ultimately wins. Also on Saturday, the ASC Earth Group is hosting a bake sale in front of Richardson Hall.  All proceeds benefit the group, and it will be open from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
“The Examined Life” art exhibit will be open during Autumn@Adams week, but will remain open throughout September.  This exhibit will feature community and student art that expresses the artist’s interpretation of “The Examined Life.”  It is open for anyone to attend between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays in the Community Partnerships Gallery.
Besides attending the week’s events, ASC students can get involved in Autumn@Adams in other ways.  The Autumn@Adams Committee is incredibly interested in hearing student feedback, and welcomes any student willing to join the committee and have a hand in choosing events and a theme for next year’s celebration.
Autumn@Adams was originally introduced by former ASC President Richard Wueste.  President David Savaldi recognized the value of the celebration and has kept it alive.  The primary purpose of Autumn@Adams, according to Relyea, is to “bring in events that would not only educate and inform, but also entertain.”
