Adams State University hosted the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend in the High Altitude Training Center. On Friday there were eight preliminaries, three field finals, two track finals, the women’s pentathlon, and four events in the men’s pentathlon. Kandace Thomas set a new RMAC record in the 200 with a time of 23.63 and in the 60 with a 7.30. She also claimed an automatic qualifying mark in the long jump with a leap of 6.32m. Ian Kerr also set a new RMAC and facilities record in the 200 with a 21.54 who was running in the High Altitude Training Center for the final time.
“It meant a lot. I cried a little because I broke all of my records in that bubble,” said Ian Kerr.
Ben Schneiderman came in second in the men’s 5,000 meter race with a 15:22.29. Adams State claimed the top three spots on the women’s 5,000 meter race led by Malena Grover (18:06.86). Behind her was Kianna Darioosh-Bonnet (18:12.89) finishing in second and Kaylee Bogina (18:17.11) finishing in third. Adams State won the distance medley relay with a time of 11:54.82. Kathrine Smith came in second in the women’s pentathlon including a 2:30.80 during the final 800m race. The women’s team was in second place after day one with 53 points, just two points behind UCCS for first place. The men’s team was in fourth place with 19 points, 3 behind Colorado Mesa for fifth place.
On day two Adams claimed the top two spots in the mile; Roisin Flanagan came in first running a 5:01.16, and freshman Stephanie Cotter came in second running a 5:03.67. In the men’s shot put, Samuel Reid came out on top with a toss of 18.10-meters. Malakah Martinez came in second in the women’s 400 meter finishing with a time of 55.80. Augie Larranaga was just edged out for the win in the 400 meter by South Dakota School of Mines’ Jonathon Murray, who also ran a 49.18. In the women’s 60 meter, Kandace Thomas tied the Division II record running a 7.18. It was also the fastest time run by an American this year. Finishing in second was Dianna Johnson running a 7.22. However Johnson was able to come back to win the women’s 200 meter (24.16). On the men’s side, Ian Kerr took home third with a time of 6.91. And after breaking the RMAC’s 200 meter record the day before Kerr came back and beat his own record running a 21.40 this time around. In the women’s 60 meter hurdles, Katherine Smith came in second (8.91). Sisters Eilish and Roisin Flanagan claimed the top two spots in the 3k, running a 10:01.23 and 10:13.08 respectively.
The women’s team came out on top with 157 points; UCCS came in second with 125. The men’s team tied for fourth with Colorado Mesa with 82 points. After two days of competing, the Adams State men’s and women’s team captured the team championship trophy.
