ALAMOSA (February 24) – Adams State University recently named Lia Carpio the director for the Higher Education Administration and Leadership (HEAL) graduate program. She succeeds Dr. Melissa Freeman who left for a faculty position at the University of Denver.
“We had a great search and some very impressive candidates,” said School of Business Chair, Dr. Michael Tomlin, “but it kept coming back to Lia. We are excited and very pleased to have her join our graduate program administrative team.”
After the interview process, Carpio received the news February 7. She has been the program coordinator since early 2011. She is currently in the program and anticipates completing the degree this summer. “This is an exceptional program. If higher ed professionals are interested in moving their careers forward, or even just want to bring more knowledge and experience to their current positions, they should call me, because HEAL would be a great place to start.”
For the next few months, Carpio will focus on recruiting for the Fall 2014 cohort. She plans on highlighting the successes of the program’s current students and alumni at recruitment trips and fairs. “Some of our ‘HEALers’ have years of experience in higher education, while others are just starting their careers, but they all benefit.” She said many were promoted in their professional positions after completing the degree.
Carpio received a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University. She is currently on the National Hispanic Institute Board of Trustees, and is a member of the Colorado Coalition for the Educational Advancement of Latinos (CoCEAL). Carpio also serves as the educational director for the National Hispanic Institute Colorado Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session.
The HEAL program prepares higher education professionals to manage and lead in institutions of higher education, especially Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), and to enhance the success of the students they serve. Adams State’s Master of Arts and post-graduate Executive Leadership Institute offer cohort-based, experiential learning in an online environment. These flexible programs are designed for the working professional. The M.A. program is a two-year program and the Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) is a one-year, post-graduate program. Both have two residencies—an orientation and a Leadership Summit—which provide networking and mentoring opportunities for students.
