First off, welcome back to all our returning AS&F and a simple welcome to the students and faculty who are new to the Adams State community. Now that everyone has had a little bit of time to settle in and get back into the swing of classes, I am sure there is a question that has crossed many of your minds and the minds of college students everywhere, “How do I make some extra cash?”
Some of you have probably looked into employment with some of the fine retailers and service renders here in the San Luis Valley and found a job that works for you and pays the bill or gets you that little bit of extra money you were looking for.
Others may have found that a traditional job is not exactly going to work around your class schedule, or in some cases your practice schedule and athletic season.
Well my dears you are still in luck! As part of most financial aid packages, students are often offered a wonderful little gem called work study.
What is a work study for our new students? A work study is in short a job where you are employed by an office on the Adams State campus. There are a few exceptions where you could be working with one of ASU’s partners in the community who employs students through the work study program.
Here at Adams you can find a work study almost anywhere on campus, from the library to the school of business. There are even chances to model for the art department, and for those of you interested in athletics; there are plenty of work studies offered out of Plachy Hall.
Now I take it you are wondering how to procure one of the lovely jobs? Well you are more than welcome to go around and talk to various ASU staff and faculty and hope for the best, or even try the offices for the department you are interested in; but to make it just a little bit easier for yourself and to get a little bit of an idea of what sort of jobs are out there, you can go to the school’s web page, www.adams.edu.
Now from this site go to the page for Financial Aid. Here you will find a variety of options, but you want to select the link labeled “Obtain Work Study.” Here you will get a page with four steps that will help you in your quest to obtain a work study.
Number one on the list is “Find a Job.” When you select this link you will be taken to a page where all the campus departments are listed. After selecting a department, you will be presented with a list of the positions offered in the department and who to contact for more information on the job.
A word to the wise here, when you apply for a work study, make sure you check your student account under financial aid and see that you are offered a work study as part of your financial aid package; and while you are checking your eligibility for work study, make sure you take the time to accept it.
Trust me this will save you time and frustration later. Another heads up in regards to step three of obtaining work study, make sure you fill out the paperwork properly.
You will fill out an authorization form for the school as well as some financial paperwork that is for the government and necessary for you to get paid. DO NOT rush through these! Take the time to read them and fill them out properly. If you do not fill them out correctly, or are missing pieces, it can result in a delay in your pay check.
On this note, one of the forms you will be asked to complete will be an I-9. Normally any of the forms of identification listed in the forms will do, but the school specifically requires you to give them a copy of a photo ID as well as a copy of your Social Security card.
Please be forewarned, it will be a headache for you if you do not heed these warnings and advice. This will save you time and frustration and maybe a little bit of money on Advil for the impending headache.
