Softball Defeats CSU-P in Three of Four Games

The Adams State University softball team hosted the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves for an important four-game series over the weekend. The teams played two game on Friday and two more on Saturday. The Grizzlies came out on top of the series, winning three of the four games.

The first of Friday’s games was a five-inning contest. Kelsey Sellars (Denver, Colo.) was on the mound for the Grizzlies and pitched a complete game and struck out four batters as she led her team to a 9-1 victory.

The Thunderwolves’ only run of the game came in the first inning. The Grizzlies put up four runs in the first inning. Shaena Connelly (Brighton, Colo.) singled down the left field line to drive in two runs.

This was followed by a single by DJ Consonero (Pueblo West, Colo.) to drive in another run. Then Tayler Else (Grand Junction, Colo.) hit an RBI single to bring in the fourth and final run of the inning.

ASU’s only other scoring inning was the third, where they tallied five additional runs. Carly DeLorenzo (Arvada, Colo.) singled to shortstop to drive in a run. DeLorenzo then stole second and was finally brought home on a ground-rule double by Katelyn Lovato (Northglenn, Colo.).

Erika Ecsedy (Saugus, Calif.) later doubled to right to bring in another run. The final runs of the inning and of the game came on a two-RBI single by Jennie Archambault (Portland, Ore.).

In Friday’s second game, Linda Hernandez (Pueblo, Colo.) pitched the Grizzlies to a 6-1 win, throwing a complete seven innings. Pueblo’s only run of the contest again came in the first inning.

ASU’s first run of the game came in the second when pinch-runner Casey Chaney (Penrose, Colo.) scored on a throwing error. The Grizzlies added two more in the third on a two-RBI single by Archambault.

ASU scored twice more in the fifth. Brittani Richins (Tremonton, Utah) scored on a wild pitch and pinch-runner Mara Dunlap (Pueblo West, Colo.) would also cross the plate for the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies final run came on a RBI single by Lovato. Lovato finished 5-7 on the day, while Archambault was 3-5.

Saturday’s first game was the only struggle for the Grizzlies as they fell 1-6. The Grizzlies only run came in the third when DeLorenzo scored on a single up the middle by Lovato.

The Thunderwolves scored four runs in the second inning and one run in each the third and seventh to top ASU.

The Grizzlies were able to turn things around for the second game to win by a close 4-3 in nine innings. Sellars pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters.

Adams State got on the board first, scoring two runs in the first inning on a double by Erica Haugum (Arvada, Colo.). The Thunderwolves scored two runs in the third and another run in the fifth, which put them up by one run.

The Grizzlies tied the game in the seventh when Richins grounded out to second and DeLorenzo scored. Then in the ninth, Jordan Schoepflin (Arvada, Colo.) reached base on a walk.

Chaney came in again to pinch run and stole second base. DeLorenzo singled to third and then Lovato singled down the left field line to bring in Chaney, who marked the game-winning run. Lovato was 4-5 and DeLorenzo was 2-3 in the final game of the series.

The Grizzlies will play a four game series with Colorado Christian this weekend with the action kicking off at noon on Friday.
