Spring Career Fair Hosts Employers From All Over

The annual Spring Career Fair will be taking over the Student Union Building on Thursday, March 7 from 10am until 3pm. The SUB banquet rooms will play host to prospective employers and graduate programs. Jennifer Cliff, the Career Services Coordinator, says, “Employers will travel from as far away as Dallas, Texas and the career fair will have more than 30 future employers. There will also be graduate programs to meet with as well.”

There will also be employers from the front ranger and the San Luis Valley attending. A few local employers that will be in attendance are the SLV Regional Medical Center, SLV Mental Health Center, and Community Resources Housing Development Corporation. Some of the employers from the front range and beyond are the US Forest and Wildlife Department, Crossroads Turning Point, US Forest Service, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and Adams County School District.

The career fair will be an excellent opportunity for seniors to get a glimpse of their future job market. The career fair will also allow senior to network and make connections that could prove to be very useful upon graduation.

The career fair is not just for seniors, but underclassmen as well. The employers will be advertising internships and summer jobs, which would be a great addition to any resume.

In preparation for the career fair, the Student Success Center coordinated an etiquette dinner. It was the second year the etiquette dinner was scheduled. The purpose of the etiquette dinner was to educate students on how to successfully communicate and network with people in order to make yourself more appealing to employers. The dinner required participants to dress in professional attire, and gave a fine dining experience including four courses. Throughout the evening, a presentation on etiquette by Brain Rupture on given to participants.

The career fair last year was attended by 150 to 200 students. The expectation is that there will be some growth from last year’s attendees. Students are expected to dress in professional attire. Relaxed attire could send a negative message to possible employers.

The resume book, which was closed for submissions on Feb. 21, will be given to each of the employers to review. However, it is strongly encouraged that students bring multiple copies of their resumes to distribute amongst the employers at the career fair.

On occasion, employers have even given students interviews on the spot, so it would be wise to prepare accordingly. With the resume book, etiquette dinner, and Spring Career Fair, the Student Success Center is giving students every opportunity to prepare for their post-education endeavors.
