Mathew Moore founded the Adams State Climbing Club several years ago. Club member Amy Dessain was an active participant and took over when Mathew graduated. The ASCC has since been very successful and currently have fifteen active members. “Some students just want to work out and learn about climbing but most want to compete,” explains Amy. The ASCC has three team practices each week -“More experienced climbers offer technique advice for less experienced climbers but we don’t have any formal climbing lessons.” The ASCC does offer workshops to teach climbing knots and fundamental skills for climbing outdoors. Amy is proud of the success her team has experienced over the last year. In the spring, they competed in the Collegiate Climbing Series (CCS) –“Last year at regionals we took second as an overall team!” Mathew Moore was awarded the Men’s Regional Runner-up and Amy Dessain was the Woman’s Regional Champion. The ASCC is just as hopeful about their success this semester as they were last year. They are currently training hard and preparing for this year’s CCS. On February 20 they will be competing in Albuquerque, February 27 in Colorado Springs, March 6 in Gunnison, and April 13 at Adams State College. Regionals will be held on April 17 in Boulder. The future looks bright for the Adams State Climbing Club, and Amy goes into detail about ASCC future plans. “We have several goals in mind. We would like to begin participating in the ABS (American Bouldering Series) next fall, we’d like to be able to climb outdoors by the end of this semester, we want to go to climbing clinics and technical skill clinics in Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, and to compete at a national level.
