The ASU Grizzly volleyball team qualified for the NCAA Division II national tournament last Sunday night.

This is the first time in the school’s history that a volleyball team has ever qualified. The Grizzlies finished the season with a 24-5 overall record and were announced as the fifth seed in the South Central Region. The Grizzlies have worked extremely hard this past season to achieve an amazing amount of their goals. Since day one of their pre-season, the Grizzlies had a number one goal, which was to make it to the national tournament and, well, they turned their dream into a reality. They knew that it would take commitment and determination and that’s what they gave each day on that court.

The first round of the Regional tournament will be held in Denver, Colorado at Regis University. The Grizzlies will take on Angelo State University from San Angelo, Texas on Thursday night at 5 p.m. The last time that the Grizzlies played the Belles was in 2011 during a pre season tournament at West Texas A&M, where the Grizzlies lost 0-3. The Grizzlies are 2-4 against Angelo State during their Division II era. The Grizzlies are more than ready to meet up with Angelo State again and hopefully get some revenge. The Angelo State University Belles are a part of the Lone Star Conference. The Belles finished their regular season with an overall record of 27-5 and won the Lone Star regular season title. Out of the past four matches that the Belles have played, they are 2-2. This will be their second straight appearance in the national tournament and their seventh overall. They are 3-6 all time in the NCAA Tournament.

The Grizzlies were ranked 21st in the AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll last week, Angelo State was ranked 11th.

The winner of the South Central regional will advance to the NCAA Elite 8 in Pensacola, Florida.
