The Adams State football team held their final scrimmage of the pre-season on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Rex Field. The Green and White scrimmage kicked off at 10:30 a.m. and was the team’s final showing before the start of the regular season.
The Grizzlies will begin the regular season this Saturday, Sept. 1 when they host the Red Storm from Dixie State College (Utah). The game is set to start at 7 p.m. and will be ASU’s only contest under the lights at home this season.
Gates open at 6 p.m. for Saturday’s contest. Student admission is free if they show their ASU student ID. Also, the game will be a white out event, and fans are encouraged to wear white to support the Grizzlies. White out t-shirts will be on sale at the game for ten dollars each.
The Grizzlies have come out on top in their two previous meetings with Dixie State. In the 2010-2011 season, the Grizzlies beat the Red Storm 34-14 at home. On the road in the 2011-2012 season, Adams State got the victory with a final score of 24-14. Both games were season openers for the Grizzlies.
The team will then be on the road for three straight weeks, facing Wayland Baptist University (Texas), Western State Colorado University, and Colorado State University- Pueblo. ASU returns home on Saturday, Sept. 29 to host Chadron State at 1 p.m. A complete schedule of all of the Grizzlies’ contests can be found on the Adams State website, asugrizzlies.com.
Last season, Adams State finished with a 6-5 overall record and a 4-5 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. This record placed the Grizzlies fifth among their opponents.
On Aug. 6, Head Coach Marty Heaton, who enters his fifth season leading the Grizzlies, spoke to the media at RMAC media day in Colorado Springs. He discussed how he felt his team would perform and some of the strengths he believes his squad possesses. Three Grizzlies also spoke at the event. Seniors James Ackel (Riverside, Calif.), Scott Kellogg (Littleton, Colo.), and Kevin Ashak (Mesa, Ariz.) talked about their team and their goals for the season.
At Media Day, the Grizzlies were picked to finish fourth in the conference behind Colorado State University- Pueblo, Colorado School of Mines, and Chadron State, respectively. Adams State also had four players named to the Pre-Season All-RMAC teams. Kellogg and Ashak were named to the All-RMAC Offense team, Ackel was named to the All-RMAC Defense team, and senior David Van Voris was a unanimous selection for the All-RMAC Special Teams team.
