DENVER – After gaining momentum, and ground in the league standings by sweeping Regis on Saturday, Adams State softball was unable to keep the streak alive as the Grizzlies dropped both games of Sunday’s weekend finale to the Rangers, 3-8 and 2-4.
The Grizzlies are now 11-13 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play, and fall to 15-17 overall this spring. Meanwhile, RU ups its league mark to 12-10 with a 13-19 overall tally.
The Rangers pounced on ASC’s game one starter freshman Brandi Lovato (Pueblo, Colo.) early. Lovato lasted just 2.0 innings, surrendering five earned runs on six hits while walking two and striking out none. Lovato is now 1-5 on the season.
Junior Mariah Skaggs (Danville, Ill.) followed with four excellent innings of relief work in which she allowed just five hits and no runs.
The Grizzlies found it difficult to get much going off RU starter Nikki Haberkorn. The Ranger senior went all seven innings, giving up just one earned run on four hits. ASC also squeezed out another two unearned runs, all three scores coming in the fourth inning, but it was not enough to overcome the early damage.
Freshman first baseman Erica Haugum (Arvada, Colo.) was the offensive stand-out in the first game, lacing an RBI double in the fourth. Haugum was 2-for-3 with one run batted in and one run scored.
The weekend finale saw a pitching duel break out between Regis starter Sydney Gaffin and the Grizzlies’ freshman Kelsey Sellars (Denver, Colo.).
Gaffin won the battle, pitching a complete game while giving up two runs on six hits, settling in after allowing a solo home run to Grizzly junior center fielder Katelyn Lovato (Northglenn, Colo.) to lead off the game.
Sellars also pitched a complete game, and gave up four runs on ten hits, and struck out four Rangers, but suffered the loss to fall to 4-5 on the season.
RU worked Sellars for two runs in the fourth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly and a 2-out single.
ASC answered with senior third baseman Rebecca Lindquist’s (Fort Collins, Colo.) RBI double, making it a one run game.
Regis countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the 6th, putting Regis up by two runs again.
Haugum singled to lead off the 7th, in hopes of igniting a rally, but the next three batters went in order, and ASC lost 2-4.
The Grizzlies will be busy this week playing double-headers on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The week will begin with a midweek road game against Colorado State-Pueblo on Wednesday at 2 & 4 p.m., and will then see the Grizzlies return for a 4-game series with RMAC foe Colorado Christian on Friday and Saturday, April 6-7.
The ThunderWolves are currently second in the RMAC standings with a mark of 16-8 in league play while owning an 18-10 overall record. CSU-Pueblo posted 16-4 mark in the month of March, ending the month by splitting their weekend series against CCU on Friday and Saturday with a 2-2 record.
