The Adams State Grizzly Wrestlers hosted the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves Thursday, Feb. 9 for the Grizzly’s second to last Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) dual. In the end, the Grizzlies took away a 34-7 victory. ASC never trailed during the dual and only gave up two matches to the Thunderwolves.
The opening match of the night featured the 125-weight class and sophomore Jerry Huff (Broomfield, Colo.). Huff won by major decision and gave ASC a 4-0 lead to begin the evening. This win marks Huff’s 15th straight win, and he remains undefeated in dual meets this season.
Third-ranked junior Ryan Fillingame (Victorville, Calif.) faced off in the 133 weight class against CSU- Pueblo’s second-ranked Jesse Hillhouse. Fillingame lost the match by a score of 3-5. CSU-Pueblo gained three points, putting the score of the duel at 4-3, still in favor of the Grizzlies.
In the 141-weight class, Junior Max Ortega (Rio Rancho, N.M.) was good for six points for the Grizzlies after pinning his man in the second period. This was Ortega’s third win by fall this season.
Senior Josh Hensley (Alamosa, Colo.) added 5 more points for ASC. He won by technical fall, tallying a score of 18-2 in his match in the 149-weight class. This win brings Hensley up to 8-2 in dual meets this season, and this is his seventh win by technical fall.
Before the break, sophomore Daniel Kelley (Parker, Colo.), in the 157-weight class, contributed another three points for the Grizzlies with a win by decision.
After the break, the 165-weight class featured sophomore Justin Samora (Cortez, Colo.). The match was called due to an injury to CSU-Pueblo’s Matt Addington. This added another six points for the Grizzlies, putting them up 24-3.
Junior Jarrod Purvis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won 13-6 in the 174-weight class, tacking another three points onto ASC’s lead.
CSU-Pueblo gained their only other points of the night in the 184-weight class. Sophomore Darian Roberts (Arvada, Colo.) lost his match by major decision. This put the dual score at 27-7 with the Grizzlies still on top.
In the 197-weight class, senior Luke McPeek (Albuquerque, N.M.) won by major decision, earning four more points for ASC. McPeek is now 9-1 in dual meets this season.
The final match of the night featured the 285-weight class. Junior Taylor Stam (Parker, Colo.) took home this match with a 3-1 victory and helped the Grizzlies secure a 34-7 win on the night.
The win puts ASC at 8-2 overall and 7-2 in RMAC competition. They are ranked third in the RMAC, behind Nebraska-Kearney and Grand Canyon University.
