ASC Cares Day Celebration is a way for organizers to thank the participants from the previous ASC Cares events and to clean up around the campus.
Everyone is invited to join in the celebration on April 23 on the Campus Green beginning at 10:30 a.m. with a campus wide clean up. Participants are asked to wear their ASC gear or their ASC Cares Day shirt if they have one. Groups and individuals will then spend around an hour picking up trash around campus.
Anyone interested in volunteering can find information at www.adams.edu/community/asccares/.The website also includes links with more information on participating in the Plunge where volunteers sign up to go out and work for local nonprofit organizations. Participants can stay on as active volunteers in the organization or work through a short term project.
Any groups or individuals who have previously participated in an ASC Cares Day are asked to make a display that describes their service and will include any mementos they have from their project. These will be displayed in the solarium to help publicize the celebration.
Local organizations have been asked to take part in the clean up and celebration. The groups who have previously suggested projects for ASC Cares have been invited and representatives from AmeriCorps and Alamsoa High School students have already said they will come to the college.
Last year’s celebration went pretty well and organizers are hoping for even more people to come out this year. Participants will be able to enjoy a live band, lawn games and barbecue at noon after the work has been finished. The main goal of the day is to celebrate the relationships that have been established though the ASC Cares projects.
A volunteer committee comprised of ASC staff, students and community members including the Associated Students and Faculty, Campus Ministry and Mental Health at Adams State College organizes all of the ASC Cares events. The committee will begin planning for the fall ASC Cares Day soon.
Elizabeth Bosworth of the ASC Student Life Center said that volunteerism is present on the campus and many students hold volunteer positions in the community before they sign up for ASC Cares. The committee would like to “support each other in our efforts to volunteer.” ASC Cares events help to get students out into the community and to acknowledge the volunteer community on campus.
In October, many student groups and individuals signed up for a variety of projects in the San Luis Valley. Volunteers worked with La Puente Home to glean potatoes left over after harvest. The food collected during the day was given to La Puente’s food bank.
Many groups worked on cleanup projects for organizations like Model United Nations, Sacred Heart Parish, ASC Cares road clean up, Conour Animal Shelter and Mi Animo Prevention SLVCCMHC.
Other organizations that took part in ASC Cares day included the SLV BLM, Valley Humane League, Blue Peaks Developmental Services, Tu Casa, Inc., Colorado Gators, and the Sargent, Monte Vista and Center school districts.
