In a big weekend for Grizzly athletics, several personal, school and NCAA records were broken. Women’s basketball senior Kendra Coveal has been named as the ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week ending Feb. 13. This was Coveal’s second ASCGrizzlies.com honor as she won the award on Jan. 16.
Coveal was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC)/Baden Offensive Player of the Week honors for her 56-point weekend explosion.
The recognition is Coveal’s second this season after also taking the offensive honor on Jan. 10, and is the second straight week an Adams State player has been named. It is also the fourth RMAC/Baden weekly honor for the Grizzlies this season, tied for second most in the league.
For the weekend, Coveal averaged 28.0 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting 95.5 percent (21-22) from the field and hitting 82.4 percent (14-17) of her free throw attempts. She currently ranks second in the RMAC in rebounding (8.1 rpg), third in field goal percentage (53.7 percent) and ninth in scoring (14.2 ppg).
The ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award, which will be handed out weekly, was selected by a vote of media members and ASC athletic administrators as well as by visitors to the Grizzly website, who could cast their vote in an online poll.
Coveal, who won the award with 13 points, had some tough competition. She was up against Janelle Higgs of the swim team, who set several personal and ASC records at the RMAC Swim meet over the weekend, Craig Huffer of the men’s indoor track team, who ran a 4:00.00 mile, Kristen McGlynn of the women’s track team, who broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run.
In addition to these she was up against softball’s national and conference player of the week, Jaycee Lovato, who broke the school record for RBI in a game and tied the record for homers in a game. Marquis Richards of the men’s basketball team, Luke McPeek of the wrestling team and Alyssa Smith of the junior varsity women’s basketball team were also nominated for the award.
