2-time NCAA Division II Cross Country All-American Kristen McGlynn broke Adams State College Hall of Famer Zoila Gomez’s school record in the 5,000 meters as McGlynn turned in a strong time of 16 minutes, 16. 51 seconds to finish third in her section of the event in the Flotrack Husky Classic, which got underway here in the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor.
McGlynn’s time was nearly five seconds better than Gomez’ 2004 NCAA Division II Championship winning and then championship record mark of 16:21.40 and will rank her as high as third on this year’s NCAA Division II National Performance List. It was also nearly 33 seconds under the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II Championships, which the Grizzlies will host in Albuquerque, N.M. on Mar. 11 and 12.
Gomez, who won six national championships during her time as a Grizzly, has represented the United States at two IAAF World Championships in the marathon.
Meanwhile, junior Addison LeMaster posted a time of 17:49.91 on the fast oversized track in an earlier section of the event. Although that time is off the NCAA provisional qualifying standard, she now ranks amongst the leaders on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s performance list.
The Grizzlies also had a partial contingent of five athletes competing earlier Friday at the Air Force Invitational back at home in Colorado.
That group was led by junior Jenna Bohnen, who turned in a performance of 16.01 meters (52 feet, 6 ½ inches) to finish sixth in the weight throw. That performance, less than a foot off her career-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 16.29 meters (53’5 ½”) earned her and the Grizzlies three team points.
Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Katie Kruger took 15th in the event with a heave of 13.68 meters (44’10 ¾”).
On the track, the Grizzlies had two entrants in the 200 meters and another in the 800 meters.
Freshman Chelsea Fenderson took 17th in the 200 with a time of 25.67 seconds, that even with a 1/10th of a second track size adjustment, is new season-best by 0.27 seconds. Teammate Jazmine Ralph also matched her season-best without the track-size penalty taking 20th in 25.83 seconds.
In the 800 meters, sophomore Tanisha Thomas finished 31st with a time of 2:33.89.
Adams State sophomore Keegan Calmes ran a PR and NCAA Championships automatic qualifying time in the mile at the Flotrack Husky Classic hosted by the Univ. of Wash., and now ranks No. 2 in Division II behind only teammate Craig Huffer
The Grizzlies wrapped up their split-squad weekend with contingents in action at both the Husky Classic and at the Air Force Invitational. The Grizzlies added Calmes’ automatic qualifying mark as well as another provisional time in the mile, raising their weekend total to five NCAA Championships qualifiers.
Calmes, who had previously run a provisional qualifying time in the mile, came in even faster on Saturday, running a time of 4 minutes, 3.87 seconds (4:04.27 converted). Calmes was the second D-II runner in the race, behind Huffer who ran a time of 4:00.49 (4:00.89 converted). Huffer’s time adjusted time of 3:59.72 run at the Univ. of New Mexico Cherry & Silver Invitational on Jan. 21 still ranks atop that list, while Calmes’ time ranks more than 1.5 seconds ahead of the third time on the list.
Joining Calmes and Huffer on the track for the mile at the Husky Classic were redshirt freshman Anotine Malarte and freshman Tabor Stevens. Malarte made it a trio of Adams State NCAA Championships qualifiers in the mile, running a provisional time of 4:09.54 (4:09.94 converted), which currently ranks ninth in D-II. Stevens clocked a time of 4:13.77 (4:14.17 converted).
