LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE

The Medicine Show last Wednesday night was a huge hit. The audience was packed to watch all the clubs perform the humorous acts. The Medicine Show is an old Adams State tradition that was founded when we were the Adams Sate Indians. Indians believe that laughter is the best medicine so Adams State put this show together.

The show starts with a humorous introduction by the host and hostess, Eric Lutringer and Ashlie Cogburn, as they pretend that they just got married in Las Vegas, which happens to be the theme of Homecoming 2009, ‘Outrageous Las Vegas’. They told us the history of the medicine show and introduced the three judges, who were James Truillo, Joel Korngut, and Phil Schroeder.

The first skit was done by the Semillas De La Tierra club, represented by Vanessa Barela and Luis Salazar. They did a cute skit about the football game against the Mustangs to music.

During the transitions of the skits Ashlie and Eric would ask the homecoming nominees of the previous skit questions to cause some funny results and create more laughter.

The second skit was a hilarious skit preformed by the Business Clubs and represented by Olivia Martinez and A.J. Webb. Their skit was of a talent show with four girls trying to become dancers in Las Vegas. None of the girls could dance so the host finally brought out his professional dancers which were guys dressed in spandex, wigs, skirts, and sports bras. Then the host of the talent show started to dance to show everyone how it was done. During the nominees’ questions A.J. Webb told a hilarious story about getting locked in a greyhound bus bathroom.

The Third skit was the Psychology club and Model U.N. club. They did fun little skit on a poker game. At the end the dealer ran off with all the money and gave it to one of the players in exchange for a Cuban cigar.

The Spirit Squad was the next to perform, represented by Jiovani Coleman and Erica Aguilar. There skit was a try-out to be on the squad.  At the end Jiovani and Erica showed everyone what dancing should look like.

Mock Trials’ skit was a humorous skit on the trouble you can get into while in Vegas. The Education club had a fun skit about high school in Vegas having classes like card counting 101. They were represented by Manuel Pacillas IV and Melissa Slemp.

The Newman Club, represented by Cheryl Grette and Marcus Vargas, had an entertaining skit about nuns going wild. The nuns went to Las Vegas and learned how to dance by Elvis.

El Parnaso Club, represented by Benito Herrera and Xochitl Aguilera, had an interesting skit that started out with a magic show and then continued with a boy trying to win at gambling. The Science clubs, represented by Amber Harlan and David Gurule, also had a magic show type skit. They used chemicals to show up the Mustangs in a competition.

The Sports and Business Clubs, represented by Hope Rheingans and Jerry Smith, had a ‘fight night’ in Vegas where the fighters were in sumo wrestler suits.

The SiFi Club, represented by Jon Andujar and Robin Pryor, had a great skit on the bizarre marriages that happen in Vegas.

The Poker Club had a great game of poker for their skit, with their nominees being Codi Bowersox and Niki Ploawright.

The Dance Club put on a great performance with their dance skills. They had several dancers and drummers and they really got good audience response when they danced through the aisles.

The final two clubs were the Art League, who had a handmade piano and was represented by Chris Wolf and Lauren Hicks, and the Music Clubs. The Music Clubs put on a great musical performance, really showing off all of their amazing talents.  They were represented by Halie Vaniwaardena and Garrett Losack.

The first place winners of the show were the Music Clubs, and second place was a tie between the Newman Club and the Sports and Business Clubs.  Third place went to the Education Club.
