Adams State juniors Amber Drumm and Jessica Hellweg tied for the team lead in goals with six each this fall, and have now both been named to the 2010 All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squad, announced Tuesday by league officials. Both were second team picks.
The selection to the All-RMAC team was the first for Drumm, who was a Second Team Academic All-RMAC selection in both 2009 and 2010 and has twice been named the Grizzlies’ team MVP. Hellweg is a Second Team All-RMAC selection for the second time in her career, having received the honor in 2009 as well.
Hellweg becomes just the third two-time All-RMAC selection in Grizzly history, a feat previously accomplished by only Sarah Johnson (2003 & 2005) and Ashley Sales (2007 & 2009). The selections also mark just the fourth time that two ASC players have been selected as All-RMAC performers in the same season.
Drumm recorded a single-season best six goals this fall, topping her previous season best of five which she accomplished as a freshman in 2008. Three of those goals came on penalty kicks, as Drumm became the ASC season and career record holder for both attempts and goals on penalty kicks. Her four attempts raised her career total to five, and her three goals puts her at four for her career. Her final penalty kick goal of the season was a game-winner in overtime against UC-Colorado Springs on Oct. 17.
In addition, Drumm added an assist to end the season with 13 points, which ties for seventh on the Adams State single-season list. She started all 18 games for the Grizzlies this fall, and her 1,564 minutes played was the second most on the team.
Hellweg got her season off on the right foot, scoring the Grizzlies’ first goal of the year in their opener, a non-conference meeting with CSU-Pueblo on Sept. 3, and added an assist later in the match. Her season total of six goals matches her season high, after tallying six as a sophomore in 2009 as well, while three assists and 16 points are both season bests.
Three of Hellweg’s goals were game-winners, including her strike in the Grizzlies’ season finale against Nebraska-Kearney on Oct. 31. She now ranks in a tie for the second-most game-winners in a season in program history, and is tied for the career lead with five such goals.
The six goals this season also put Drumm and Hellweg in a tie for fifth in Grizzly single-season history, and ranks them both 12th in the RMAC this season.
Each player moved up the on the career scoring charts throughout the fall as well. Hellweg now ranks third in Adams State history in both career goals (15) and points (35). Drumm, who increased her career total to 13 goals, ranks fourth in that category, and sits in sixth in the Grizzly record books with 28 career points.
The Grizzlies finished the season with a record of 5-12-1 and were 4-9-1 in league play. The five wins are the second most recorded by ASC in head coach Tom Cliff’s tenure, and the four RMAC wins matches the most put up under Cliff. The four victories at home are also the most under Cliff, and is the third most in program history.
