Adams State sophomore defender Jordan Stillwagon (Littleton, Colo.) picked up eight groundballs and caused five turnovers in two games last week, helping the Grizzlies to go 1-1 in their first two home games of the season, and for the effort has earned Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (WILA) Men’s Defensive Player of the Week honors.
For the Grizzlies, last week’s contests at ASC Lacrosse Field against WILA foes Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) and Lindenwood (Mo.) were the first regular season home contest of the year after opening the season with six away contests.
The Grizzlies began the week on Friday, March 23, with their second match-up of the season against NDNU. Stillwagon caused three of his team-best five turnovers for the week in that contest as ASC swept the season series against the Argonauts with a 12-6 win.
Stillwagon added another quartet of groundballs, and caused another pair of turnovers, in a 9-12 loss to WILA newcomer Lindenwood on Sunday afternoon.
Stillwagon’s 36 groundballs this season leads the Grizzlies, and his 22 caused turnovers are 14 more than any of his teammates.
Likewise, his 4.50 groundballs per game and 2.7 caused turnovers per game both rank first in the WILA.
Adams State currently sits third in the league standings with marks of 4-4 overall and 3-2 in WILA play. Colorado Mesa, which owns a 10-3 win over ASC in the Grizzlies’ season-opener, leads the association with a mark of 5-2 overall and 3-0 in league play. Dominican (Calif.) is second in the standings at 4-4 and 3-1 in league play. The Penguins lone defeat in the WILA came against Adams State on March 18 in San Rafael, Calif.
The Grizzlies are idle this week but will return to action on Thursday, April 5, to conclude a 3-game home stand against WILA foe Dominican at 7 p.m. in Rex Stadium. The game will be played under the lights between ASC and the Penguins, and will be the first ever lacrosse game to be played in the new stadium.
