Driftwood Fire came to Adams State College to perform in Leon Memorial Hall, the Veterans Club Banquet, and at Vistas Restaurant during the last week of March. The concert was held in Leon on Thursday, March 29 at 6 p.m. and was hosted by the Grizzly Activity Board (GAB). Driftwood Fire consists of two women from Virginia that sing and play string instruments. Lynn Scharf sings and plays an acoustic guitar and Charlotte Formichella sings and plays the banjo and a huge base guitar.
On Friday night, Driftwood Fire was the first concert hosted at Vistas for the community. Very few seats were open to sit down in to enjoy a glass of beer, grab a bite of food, mingle with others, and listen to some music because of the large turnout.
Formichella and Scharf’s sounds were soft and had a mixture of folk, country, and blues to it. Scharf had a calm and sweet voice that speaks from her heart and shows her emotions on the subject that she sings about. Formichella concentrated on playing her two different instruments and still feeling the beat and music that they created.
The musicians are also storytellers and they shared their life experiences and dreams with the listeners. They talked about the Appalachian Mountains, nature, and growing up in Virginia. They also sang about the relatable themes of love and struggles. They encouraged the audience to check out their website (DriftwoodFire.com) and like them on Facebook so that they are more connected in the digital/ Internet realm.
Scharf explains on Driftwood Fire’s website that, “[They] want to give people an experience that slows down time a bit and encourages them to sit back and catch their breath — and maybe find a part of themselves in this music, like we did” (Driftwood Fire). That is exactly the vibe that Driftwood Fire gave off when performing at Adams State College. Way to go ladies! Hopefully, their performance will inspire musicians here on campus to work hard, keep doing what they do, and perform at different locations around the country.
