Athlete of the Week for April 7: Jonathan Atenctio

Adams State College sophomore  golfer Jonathan Atencio recorded the best score in each of the two rounds en -route  to the individual championship 36-hole, one-day Quality Inn Spring Invitational hosted by Mesa State College here at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa.

Atencio, who made two of the three total eagles turned in during windy conditions at the 7,007-yard, par-72 course on Monday, turned in scorecards of 74 and 78 and leads Mesa State’s Brandon Bingaman and Eric Farmer and the rest of the 13-player field.

Other nominees were women’s golfer Codi Hegg who had her best round in her career, ASC softball player Jaycee Lovato who hit three homers and nabbed five walks, and ASC track stars Rueben Mwei and Indira Spence. The ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award, which will be handed out weekly, was selected by a vote of media  members and ASC administrators as well as by visitors to the Grizzly website, who could cast their vote in an online poll.

A new poll will be posted each Sunday night after all of the Grizzly teams have concluded their competition for the weekend. The votes will be tabulated each Wednesday, when the Athlete of the Week will be announced.
