ASU Sweeps Colorado Christian

The Adams State baseball team hosted the Colorado Christian Cougars this weekend for a cold, four-game series. The teams played two games on Friday, March 22 followed by another two on Saturday.

The Grizzlies took away the opening game of the series by a score of 20-13. ASU registered 23 hits and Jeffrey Schmitt (Cheyene, Wyo.) got the win for the Grizzlies. Schmitt threw five complete innings and gave up nine runs on six hits.

Kyle Sedlak (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was 4-5 on the day with four RBI’s. D.J. Knott (Windsor, Colo.) was 6-4 and also recorded four RBI’s. Tyler Thurston (Centennial, Colo.) went 6-4 with five RBI’s.

Friday’s second game was more hard-fought, as the Grizzlies won 2-1. Tanner Weimers walked away with the win for ASU after going five innings and giving up one run on six hits and recording one strike out.

The Grizzlies’ two runs of the game came after Dillon Granzella (Salida, Colo.), who went 2-3, singled up the middle. Freshman Dillon Bollig (Broomfield, Colo.) would then come up to hit a two-run homerun. ASU had only six hits in the game.

On Saturday, ASU easily took the afternoon’s first game by a total of 8-1. Freshman Ryker English (Fort Collins, Colo.) was on the mound for the Grizzlies and threw seven innings, gave up one run on five hits, and also struck out three batters.

The Grizzlies recorded 14 hits compared to CCU’s 6. Sedlak was 2-5 and drove in two runs. Knott was 1-3 with two RBI’s. Granzella was 2-3 while Jaron Dorchinez (Englewood, Colo.) went 3-4.

In the final game of the series, the Grizzlies came out on top and completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory. Thurston was 1-2 and had one RBI. Drew Wold (Aurora, Colo.) was 2-3.

With the sweep of CCU, ASU climbs to 7-17 overall and 6-8 in conference play. The Grizzlies will be at home again this weekend as they host Colorado Mesa with games beginning Thursday at 3pm.
