Lexy Hamilton (Monte Vista, Colo.), Amanda Hisel (Conifer, Colo.) and LiErin Wilson (Silverton, Colo.) all turned in 2-point games while freshman net-minder Danica Kristiansen (Lake Forest, Calif.) recorded 12 saves and nine groundballs as thewy led a valiant effort by the Adams State College women’s lacrosse team, which fell to powerhouse Colorado College, 12-5, Saturday afternoon here in non-conference action at the ASC Lacrosse & Soccer Field.
Although the second-year Grizzlies fell to 0-6 on the year, they never gave up against the now 9-2 Tigers, who had claimed a much-wider 16-2 victory over the Grizzlies in ASC’s inaugural game in 2011.
In the process, the Grizzlies set a new school-record for the fewest goals allowed in an official NCAA game, besting the previous record of 14 set two weeks ago against Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association rival Regis.
The Tigers were led by junior Ellie Cole, who tallied four goals and three assists. Leslie Jacoby added three goals while Grace Maloney doled out four assists. Maloney, who had a team-high 25 goals in the Tigers’ first 10 games, was held to just one by the Grizzly defense, which had their best effort thanks in large part to Kristiansen.
Meanwhile, CC’s Abby Fink made four saves to improve to 9-2, facing 22 total Grizzly shots, nine of which were on net.
The Tigers took 33 overall shots, putting 24 on net and also had a sizable 15-4 edge in draw controls. However, the Tigers only had a slight 28-26 advantage in groundballs while the Grizzlies did a good job of clearing their defense zone, successfully doing so on 19 of 25 attempts (76 percent), a big improvement over their average of 62.2 percent coming in.
Neither team would score for more than five minutes before Cole netted the first of her game-high four goals. However, Hisel answered right back tying the game at 1 with 23:09 left on the clock in the first half.
The Tigers then clamped down defensively holding the Grizzlies without a goal for more than 31 minutes as Cole tallied back-to-back goals as part of a 4-0 Tiger over the last 21 minutes of the first half.
Leading 5-1 at the break, the Tigers then quickly went up 8-1 over the first 3:31 as Maloney assisted on Jacoby and Cole goals, sandwiching an Anna Crosby strike that Cole assisted on just 18 seconds earlier.
Hisel then snapped the scoreless streak as she weaved through the Tiger defense to tally her fourth goal of the season and the second of the game with 21:46 left.
The Tigers then tallied two more to build a 10-2 lead, their largest of the afternoon thus far before Wilson scored her eighth goal of the season just 21 seconds after Jacoby’s tally to make the score 10-3 with 16:42 to go.
Hamilton, who leads the Grizzlies in goal scoring and total points, assisted on that goal moments after claiming the draw control.
Maloney then made the score 11-3 with 10:19 left before Wilson scored again to cut the gap to 11-4 with 8:14 left.
Hamilton then got into the scoring act with 5:36 left netting a free position shot before CC’s Kate Krieger capped the scoring with 3:26 to go.
The Grizzlies will now prepare for their longest road trip of the year as they will travel to face WILA-leading Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. on Apr. 17.
